Underwater Sony Xperia Z3 uboxing shows off its killer feature [VIDEO]

Although occasionally guilty of it ourselves, we’ll admit — smartphone unboxings aren’t always the funnest videos to watch. But alas, they’re a necessary evil, meant to give you a quick first look at what you can expect when you open up x device for yourself (and we typically mix in our first impressions to keep things interesting).

Earlier today, we saw what happens when you crack open an actual Sony Xperia Z3 smartphone, exposing all the modular internals to the outside world. Now, the folks at Carphone Warehouse are giving us a more unconventional unboxing of the Z3, taking the phone deep underwater in their latest YouTube video. Given that the Xperia Z3 has an IP68 rating for water, it has absolutely no problem being submerged in 1.5 meters of water. You have to admit, that’s one killer feature.

Sony Xperia Z3 gets the teardown treatment, reveals modular components and parts

We’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Sony Xperia Z3 and its smaller sibling, the Z3 Compact. Call us sick in the heads, but we take a certain amount of pleasure in watching the disassembly of these tiny pocket computers with the Sony Xperia Z3 being no different.

The phone is the subject of a new teardown by the folks at Ewisetech, giving us an up close look at everything that makes the Z3 tick. For interested parties, take a look at a few of the upcoming smartphone’s exposed parts down below.

Unsurprising, there’s not too much different from the older Z2 model (this ones got more rounded edges). The back plate is removed rather easily, using some kinda of foam insulation to keep a water tight seal. Once cracked open, inside you’ll find the use of Samsung RAM/ROM, and a handful of chips from Broadcom and Qualcomm on the exposed motherboard.

If nothing else, we were surprised at how clean and modular all the internal parts were, leaving us confident that replacing parts on the device shouldn’t be too troublesome. Fore more pictures, check out the source link below.

Pushbullet has slowly grown into one of those Android applications we simply can’t live without. Recently, we saw updates that brought the ability to reply to our phone’s SMS messages straight from our computers, and even universal copy/paste. Again, we can’t say enough about the application and how it’s helped streamline our workflow.

In a new update rolling out for Pushbullet on the web, the service is now introducing something they’re calling “Channels.” It’s a little hard to describe, but we’d liken it to services like Yo, IFTTT or RSS where you can essentially subscribe to notification feeds via Pushbullet’s new web portal. Once subscribed, you’ll receive notifications when something like a website publishes a new post, or when the channel owner wants to notify subscribers about some important update.

While RSS feeds are naturally the most obvious type of Channel, Pushbullet describes a use case scenario where small businesses, groups, or even teachers need to send something to all their subscribers at once. Sure we have email, instant messaging, SMS, or just about any number of apps that do much of this already, but the fact that it’s so easy to set up and configure on an app we’re already using makes it useful enough to give it a shot.

Alleged press image of HTC M8 Eye makes the rounds

The yet to be announced HTC M8 Eye appeared in an alleged press image. The previously leaked high-end handset is expected to debut next week, on October 8 alongside an action camera from HTC.

As you can see in the image above, HTC M8 Eye has the same design as the HTC One (M8) we know already. However, the newcomer will swap the underwhelming 4MP UltraPixel camera of the HTC One (M8) for a proper 13MP snapper (likely the same as in the HTC Butterfly 2). The secondary sensor for depth of field measuring will also be on board.

Camera aside, the specs of the HTC M8 Eye are tipped to be identical to those of the original. They include Snapdragon 801 chipset, 5 1080p display, and Sense-d Android 4.4.4 KitKat.

Overall, the HTC M8 Eye brings back memories of the HTC One X+. Launched in October 2012, the latter addressed some of shortcomings of the original One X.

In case users were wondering where Apple Pay was on their brand new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus it looks to be coming with iOS 8.1.

A developer with access to the iOS 8.1 beta named Hamza Sood tweeted a screenshot revealing a new section of settings allowing users to fill in their pertinent billing information. This includes credit or debit card numbers, addresses, phone number and email – all of which point to Apple’s tap based payment system.

In the another screenshot you can also Apple Pay’s privacy policy, which adds further evidence to iOS 8.1 will include the NFC-powered payment method.

Tablet-sized wallets

Sood also claims to have discovered another string of code, which reveals the iPad will get Touch ID and allow users to make purchases though apps with Apple Pay.

However, the United Kingdom-based programmer also clarified the code makes no mention of NFC. So users might not be bopping credit card machines with the iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 3 in the near future.

Apple Pay is slated to launch in the coming month. Meanwhile, the Cupertino is also expected to hold yet another press event where the company has been rumored to unveil new iPads and OS X Yosemite.

Like a perfect storm of tech announcements, it seems very likely Apple will unveil its next line of tablets running the full commercial build of iOS 8.1.

Google Play is now showing Android developers’ addresses and pricing for in-app purchases

In a followup to previous posts in which we highlighted some controversial new changes making their way to the Google Play Store — namely, developers being required to list their home/business address in app listings, and pricing for in-app purchases finally being a thing — it looks like both are now live on Google Play (app only for now).

While showing the price ranges for apps and games with in-app purchases is being lauded (still sucks that individual items aren’t shown), it’s the address portion that’s leaving some with a bad taste in their mouths. What’s the big deal? Well, the Google Play Store (once Android Market) was built on the backs of smaller indie developers — the same developers who may or may not have the money to afford an office or workspace away from home.

With their addresses now in plain view on all of their app listings, you can see how this could potentially create a weird situation if fallen into the wrong hands. What kind of weird situation you ask? Android developer Koushik Dutta of Clockwork Mod fame sheds some light on this subject with a brief anecdote on his Google+ page. The post describes a “creepy” situation he encountered after a disgruntled customer showed up to his place of residence.

“A few years ago, some guy bricked his Galaxy SomethingOrOther by flashing the wrong recovery. He started messaging me on Google Talk, and then on IRC asking for help. I told him I was not tech support, and that he shouldn’t have flashed the wrong recovery hoping it would work. I said to use Odin and find a debrick guide.

He knew I lived in Seattle, and said we could meet up for me to fix it. I declined. Twenty minutes later… I receive a call. It’s this guy, begging for help. I tell him that’s totally inappropriate, and that he needs to stop.

After I got off the call, I realized that the call was made from the call box downstairs, outside my building.”

We should note: the above stated situation occurred before Google’s new Play Store policies and wasn’t a result of the new changes. While it’s true, technically anyone could grab a developer’s addresses by making an app or game purchase and viewing their Google Wallet receipt, the fact that it’s now openly made public online is still a legitimate concern for some.

It’s being speculated Google was forced to go this route to stay in accordance with European laws and for the most part we get it. But it’s still unclear if developers can simply use a PO Box, UPS address, or if a physical home or business address is absolutely mandatory. What we do know is developers have 30 days to comply with Google’s request starting today, or run the risk of having their apps/games removed from Google Play.

Apple Watch production rumored to start in January

Apple presented its first wearable earlier this month, but the release of the Apple Watch is only going to happen next year. That said, the company was a bit vague on details when it came to this subject.

In these situations, though, rumors sometimes come to the rescue. The latest one on this matter, originating in Taiwan, says we should expect mass production for the Apple Watch to start in January.

That’s because Apple wants to have it in stores in February, right before Valentine’s Day. There’s apparently going to be only one company making the Apple Watch, and that’s Quanta. The Taiwanese OEM is looking to hire a lot of people for the plant that will handle the production for Apple’s smartwatch, planning to reach a peak of 40,000 employees in January.

Although Quanta is the exclusive manufacturer of the Apple Watch right now, it’s unclear whether this exclusivity has an expiration date attached. On the other hand, some unnamed “industry analysts” believe that if sales of the Apple Watch will go well, there will be a second OEM added at some point next year.

Interestingly, Quanta’s deal with Apple might have terms prohibiting it from making smartwatches for any other company but Apple.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus review: Following the curve

Introduction

Apple caved to market pressure and created a phablet. This may sound as blasphemy but it’s not the first time Cupertino is seen reacting to rivals getting too confident, too aggressive – too close for comfort. The first iPad mini had to respond back in its time to the rise of the compact Android tablets. That was different though – and not in a way perhaps that Apple will like.

The iPad mini was very much in a league of its own, by virtue of its screen size and aspect ratio. The phablet, on the other hand, is dragged into a tougher game away from home. For the first time, Apple is playing by someone else’s rules. They’re in it to win though. Second year in a row, users will be choosing from a pair, but this time it’s a pair that doesn’t have a straightforward first choice this time around. It’s an iPhone and a bigger – better? – version of it.

The iPhone 6 Plus marks the biggest leap in iPhones since the iPhone 4 and will have implications for the iPads as well. With a large 5.5″ screen to straddle the difference between the iPhone and the iPad Air.

Apple abandoned scaling the original 320 x 480 resolution by various factors and jumped to an industry standard of 1080p. This means that for the first time the iPhone can show FullHD video at 1:1 and also represents the first jump in pixel density since the iPhone 4 (even the smaller iPhone 6 is still at 326ppi).

The screen is the defining feature of the iPhone 6 Plus but another important update is the addition of Optical Image Stabilization to the camera, which has otherwise only seen iterative updates for the last four years.

• Pricey memory upgrades, 32GB version should be standard for such an expensive phone


• No user-replaceable battery


• Protruding camera lens makes the phone wobble if you don’t have a case on


• Camera is still merely 8MP four years in a row (granted, it’s getting better every with every new generation)


• No 4K video and video sound is still mono


• No enhanced resistance to liquids or dust


• NFC functionality limited to Apple Pay


• Rather pricey for a flagship (without carrier subsidies) that misses some of the extras of the competition, such as stereo speakers, wireless charging, an infrared port, or FM radio

The iPhone 6 Plus will require a big adjustment from longtime Apple faithfuls who have grown used to the iPhone’s classic size. That said, it may eat into iPad mini sales as people get to carry a large, usable screen in a pocket.

Also, changes between generations are generally small, such is the Apple way. This means the camera kept its still and video resolution and it still can’t record stereo. The chipset was sped up a bit, but only about 20%, not as nearly as big a jump as between last generations.

The largest iPhone yet

Apple introduced a new design with the Sixes, an aluminum unibody with rounded sides and corners. Comparisons with the iPod touch are inescapable – the design isn’t old (though not exactly new either) but it proved to have a weak point – causing it to bend in people’s pockets.

The Tim Cook era is seeing Apple venture into new territories but with the iPhone 6 Plus it finds itself in a house built by Android, the house of phablets. Has the company changed enough to successfully upscale iOS to 5.5 inches? iPads certainly work great but there’s more to it than that. Let’s start exploring.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime is official in India, costs $280

Samsung just made the Galaxy Grand Prime official in India with its pricing and availability also revealed. The phone will launch by the end of the week with a suggested retail price of $280 (INR 16000).

The Galaxy Grand Prime features a 1.2GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU and 1GB of RAM on the Snapdragon 400 chipset. Internal memory is 8GB but can be expanded with an additional 64GB microSD card. At the front, there’s a 5″ LCD display of qHD resolution (960×540 pixels).

The dual-SIM smartphone (dual standby, too) runs Android 4.4 KitKat and comes with a 5MP selfie camera. At the back, there’s a more capable 8MP shooter with LED flash and 1080p video recording.

The phone measures 144.8 x 72.1 x 8.6mm and weighs 156 grams. Its 2,600mAh battery is user replaceable, but there are no estimates on talk and standby times provided. As for the color variants, the phone will be offered in white and black.

iCloud Drive users, careful with that iOS 8 reset button

Apple’s rocky iOS 8 launch apparently isn’t quite over yet, as a number of users are reporting a “Reset All Settings” option appears to be living up to its name, effectively wiping out valuable iCloud Drive data it’s not supposed to.

MacRumors reported Monday that multiple readers on their forums have been bitten by an undocumented iOS 8 bug capable of purging documents from a connected iCloud Drive account, despite assurances from Apple that “no data or media will be deleted.”

The problem appears to only be affecting iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users who have first upgraded to iCloud Drive, which offers a more robust method for saving documents and other data, which can then be accessed from other synced devices.

Selecting the “Reset All Settings” option found under the General > Reset menu of the Settings app is intended as a troubleshooting measure, but as the screenshot above shows, should always leave connected iCloud account data intact.

iWork at risk

Affected users claim the bug targets only documents saved to the cloud from Apple’s own iWork suite, which is includes Microsoft Office alternatives Pages, Numbers and Keynote, while leaving data from third-party apps intact.

MacRumors was able to test the apparent bug on its own hardware, noting iCloud Drive data purged from a reset iPhone also removed all iWork documents from the iCloud.com web app as well as a Mac running the latest beta of OS X Yosemite 10.10.

While OS X users have been successful at restoring lost documents from backup folders or Apple’s Time Machine software, the report recommends iOS 8 users who have already upgraded to iCloud Drive refrain from resetting their devices until a permanent fix can be found.

Apple has yet to acknowledge the glitch, although at least one user has had their iCloud account placed into troubleshooting mode as engineers worked to investigate the problem.
